Education and experience: Stahel works today as a consultant in the field of business mana­ge­ment and industrial analysis. An alumnus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Tech­no­logy (ETH) in Zürich, where he recei­ved a diploma in architecture and town planning in 1971, he wor­ked for several years as a private archi­tect in the UK and Switzer­land; in 1973, he joined the Battel­le Geneva Research Centres as project mana­ger in the Centre for applied economics, wor­king mainly in the fields of business strategy and fea­si­bi­lity studies; in 1980 he became per­sonal assistant to the CEO of a holding company with world­wide ac­ti­vi­ties in railway main­te­nance, shipping and real estate, with special respon­sibility as a financial con­troller.

Since 1984, Stahel has worked as an independent business consultant mainly in the fields of:

  • research into utilization-related technologies such as the re-use, repair, recon­ditio­ning and techno­lo­gi­cal upgrading of components, goods and systems, from points of view of tech­ni­cal and commer­cial stra­tegies as well as industrial design;

  •  risk management and insurance, in terms of an industrial and a service economy,

  •  regional economic development,

  • in most European countries, the U.S. and Middle and Far Eastern countries.

 

1955 - 1970    Guest researcher as a theorctical physicist al the University of Heidelberg, Lawrence Radiation Laboratory and Department of physics, University of California in Berkeley, and Max-Plank-Institut for physics and astrophysics, München
1971 - 1976    Economic policy consulting with the European Center for Applied Economic Research (PROGNOS) in Basel
1976-1979 Head of the planning group at the University of Kassel, lecturer and guest professor in the field of appropriate technology, social ecology and energy-economy-ecology
1980 - 1984    Founder and diretor of the Center for Appropriate Technology and Social Ecology in Langenbruck, Switzerland
1984 - 1994  Independent seientist and consultant in the fieIds of  economics, ecology, energy, technology and work
since 1995   Research and consulting in the field of eco-design of   products, systems and services, design and innovation-management, eco-management of   companies and local & regional economies
